10 DUNNINGvRUIZ

Antonio Ruiz

What was your childhood like?

Rough. I grew up not knowing when my next meal was going to be and had to start working at the age of 10 in the lettuce, onion, celery etc fields of Mexico to help my parents.

What kind of kid were you?

Hard working. I excelled in my studies, however was very shy and struggled with socializing.

How did you get into martial arts?

When I moved to the US I started hanging out with the wrong crowd and knew I had to change my life around when I became a young father. Thanks to Martial Arts, I became the person I am today.

Who has been your biggest hero and/or influence?

My father. He showed me a lot about life and the importance of being hard worker.

At what moment did you realize this was the career for you?

This is a way of life for me. I don’t see myself doing anything else.

What are your goals in martial arts and in life?

To keep learning and able to share my knowledge with the younger generation.

What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome during your journey (can be personal or professional)?

The loss of my father. He raised me and loved me as his own and never treated me differently than his biological children. He passed away almost 3 years ago and not a day goes by that I don’t think of him.

How where you introduced to RUF MMA?

Through my coach Ruben Vargas at Proving Ground MMA.

Why should fans be sure to watch your next fight?

I will keep everyone on their toes.

I will never give up and will push forward until I finish my opponent.

What are your opponent’s biggest strengths and weaknesses?

I don’t know much about him, but I’m ready to take the fight standing or on the ground.

What has been your focus during this camp?

I’ve been working on everything from my conditioning to my striking and ground game.
